Climate & Mind Funding Support
The basics: How to support C&M
We gratefully accept contributions in increments of US$3, via our Ko-Fi page. Just click the “Buy me a coffee” link below, to support our quite minimal expenses. One $3 contribution covers 5% of our monthly expenses!
(See below for more details about our budget, about Ko-Fi, and about our policy of financial transparency).
More details
Why are we seeking support in the first place?
This site is a labor of love, dedication, and sometimes obsession. We are committed to maintaining and growing this website, and engaging in outreach around climate psychology, regardless of cost.
We've receive a lot of positive feedback and inquiries, and have seen a rapid increase in visitors since we launched in May, 2019. This reassures us and encourages us, confirming that Climate & Mind provides a valuable resource for clinicians, the media, and the general public, and that we are filling an unmet need for information and resources on the links between climate crisis, psychology, and mental health.
We have many plans to expand the C&M project in its second year. Some examples include:
Publish more articles on topics like Climate Anxiety, The Psychology of Ecofascism, Global Mental Health and the Climate, and Self-care and Empowerment for Climate Mental Health;
Expand our resource lists to include brief summaries (e.g. of important books and articles);
Revise and expand all resource pages;
Attend more local conferences and community meetings in the Pacific Northwest (North America) to share the project with others;
Record a series of talks on climate mental health for free distribution (via podcast or YouTube).
Budget and Needs
We’ll be frank: Climate & Mind has incredibly low expenses; we run on a shoe-string, and that is not going to change. Our goals are simple, and they do not cost much:
Increase the availability of resources related to climate mental health for clinicians, the media, and the general public;
Promote discussion, awareness, and action around climate psychology and resiliency.
So far, our basic expenses have been:
Domain registration & website hosting;
Books (to review before listing on the site);
Local travel/conference expenses (a trip to Portland to present at the Northwest Climate Conference);
Paid Zoom account (to run the Climate Psychology Study Group)
Labor, office space, supplies, and computers have been, and will continue to be, contributed free-of-charge by the website creators. In 2019, our total budget was $605.69 ($50.47/month - budget details are listed below), and since then costs have been closer to $35/month.
How you can help
Any support will allow us to put more time and energy into bringing attention to the connection between psychology and the climate crisis, and its impacts on mental health and resilience.
If you would like to support our continued growth, please consider making a contribution of US$3.00 to “buy us a cup of coffee” via Ko-Fi. (for information about Ko-Fi, you can visit their “About” page) Contributions can be processed through PayPal. Click the link below!
Fees (for the record): Ko-Fi does not take a fee for each contribution (we use their free level of service). However, transactions are processed through PayPal, and they, of course, take their proverbial “sip of coffee” (as it were). Paypal’s fees are US$0.30 per transaction, plus 2.9%. This means that of your $3.00, $0.39 goes to to PayPal, and we receive $2.61. We provide this information as part of our radical transparency policy (see below). If there is a lower fee option out there, please let us know!
Important Note: Contributions will not be spent on beverages! We at C&M drink a lot of coffee, but we brew our own, drip-style, and drink it black with no sugar. Every month or so we might indulge in an oat-milk macchiato at one of our great independent Seattle coffee shops. None of this is relevant to you, though, because “Buy a cup of coffee” is just a way of saying, “Make a small contribution”, like a virtual tip jar.
Another Note: Climate & Mind is not a 401(c3) (We looked into it, and at this point it’s just not worth the time, energy; although that may change in the future if we decide to apply for grants). So any contributions are not tax-deductible.
Financial Transparency Statement
We were self-funded in 2019, and it is with some hesitation that we invite contributions for 2020 and beyond, because there are so many other amazing, effective, and underfunded climate-related organizations and groups that could benefit from funds. To address this uncertainty, we decided on three policies:
Invite small contributions only (hence our Ko-Fi “Buy a cup of coffee” format);
Use contributions for financial expenses only (we do not pay ourselves);
Commit to full transparency around contributions and expenses.
We will make public the total costs and total sources of funding, and leave the choice about whether to contribute, and how much, up to visitors.
No funds will go towards the site creator’s labor, basic office expenses (computer, office space, etc.), local travel (within Seattle environs) or meals when travelling. Contributed funds will only to cover financial expenses directly related to either site maintenance; site research; and travel/registration for local presentations.
Any funds raised in excess of our budget will be held in a separate bank account, owned by the site owner/creator (to be clear, that’s me: Andrew Bryant), and will be applied toward for future projects.
Every year we will post a clear breakdown of expenses, how they were covered (self or contribution), how many excess funds were raised (if any), and how we plan to use any excess funds to further the project in the following year.
Any changes or updates to this policy will be posted here. If you have questions about any of the information on this page, please don’t hesitate to contact us at:
